Do you want to improve your writing or get published?

Maybe you want to write a novel, and you have a story inside you desperate to be put into words but have no idea where to start. Or you used to enjoy writing at school but you’re not sure if you’re any good. You have lots of ideas but you’re not sure how to structure them into compelling story.

Or perhaps you’ve always wanted to write articles for your favourite magazines. Or draft that screenplay for the movie that’s been swirling around your head for years.

Like most writers, you find writing in isolation difficult. Successful writers know that feedback is vital to producing a polished manuscript that publishers, and readers, will love. However you don’t have the right help and support.

Imagine walking into a bookstore and seeing
YOUR book on the shelves.

It’s right there, with your name on it. Inside, the carefully crafted story that began in your head as an idea is now a fully-fledged novel that’s available to everyone.

Or imagine opening a newspaper or magazine
to see your byline on the page

It’s there, right next to the story you’ve researched, written and successfully pitched to the editor.

There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing the end result of your hard work. And there’s nothing more validating than knowing a publisher believes in your writing so much they are prepared to take it from a hopeful manuscript to a published book. It’s just as rewarding when a magazine editor loves your story idea so much they commission you to write it.

community

To write a good book or a quality magazine article,
you need to know the rules.

It’s as simple as that. To write a book, article or any document that people want to read, there are clear guidelines you need to follow. They’re not restrictive. They make your writing better, and it’s these rules and techniques that will help your writing truly shine.

The courses at the Sydney Writers’ Centre are designed to help improve your writing so you have the best chance of getting published. You’ll discover the rules you need to follow to create amazing stories, intriguing characters and plots to keep your readers wanting more.

The same applies for writing newspaper and magazine articles. There are rules to follow on how to structure an article, what information to include, who to interview as well as the best way to pitch it to an editor so they will say YES!

Learn from the best

All of the presenters at Sydney Writers’ Centre are working journalists, published authors, or established screenwriters, so you’re learning from people who are practicing their craft every single day.

Our courses are unique to the Sydney Writers’ Centre and are rigorously designed to ensure consistent quality and content regardless of which presenter you have.

"Just go for it!"
You'll get results
What you can expect?

You could be published in as little as 5 weeks!

Most of our courses run for 5 weeks. They’re all information-packed and highly practical, and some of our students have been published before the end of the course, or shortly after.

If you want to write articles for magazines and newspapers, we’d suggest completing Magazine and Newspaper Writing. Countless students have been published as a result of this course.

Or if you prefer writing fiction, short stories or maybe a novel one-day, we recommend starting with Creative Writing Stage 1, which is ideal whether you are a total novice or already have some writing experience. If you want to write books for children or young adults, you should complete our Writing Books for Children and Young Adults course.

If you’d like to write a movie, then Screenwriting is for you. And if you’d like to write a memoir, like Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray Love” then Life Writing or Travel Memoir is a must.

Enjoy the added support of our writing community.

Writing can be an isolated journey, and the fact is your writing won’t improve if the only person to read it is you. When you take a course with the Sydney Writers’ Centre, you’re joining a community that offers additional resources, workshops and support from like-minded writers.

You can take one of our follow-up courses. Either a Stage 2 course, Master class workshop or one of our special-interest seminars. You can also use our manuscript assessment service and join our lively online forums that are only open to graduates.

I would like to thank both Cathie and Pamela for their input along the way. It was fantastic to be able to use the online course to help me focus and identify problems in my manuscript. Thank you to the entire team.”

"I've been signed on as a regular freelance contributor with the Herald Sun Home Magazine, something that has meant I am now freelancing four days a week! So, many thanks once again for such a fabulous course, it really has changed my life!"
