This “Industry Insight” course is ideal for you if you have a love of all things home-related and want to translate that enthusiasm into words.

understanding the market for home and interior design articles
the most common types of article that magazines wants
how you can find properties, feature ideas and contacts
tips and rules for writing about homes and interior design
how much technical knowledge and jargon you need to know
how to find an unusual angle
what editors of interior magazines are looking for
how to get the best out of an interview with an architect or builder
common problems you'll encounter and mistakes you should avoid
and MUCH more

The aim of the seminar is to help you structure your design-related articles and avoid the pitfalls that beset many writers. You may have already completed Magazine Writing Stage 1 and Stage 2, or you may be someone who is keen to write about this field and doesn’t know where to start.

NIGEL BARTLETT
A freelance writer and editor with more than 20 years’ experience in magazines. He has written and edited interior design features for Belle, Inside Out, Real Living and other magazines. His work has included house and apartment stories, before-and-after pieces, kitchen and bathroom supplements and interviews with architects, interior designers, furniture makers and store owners.

What is an “Industry Insight” course?

An “Industry Insight” course is a short course designed to give you a comprehensive overview of that industry. These courses are presented by industry professionals who are very experienced in their chosen field.

These courses are invaluable if you want to understand what you need to do in the real world to get into the industry. It’s not theory, you’ll learn from presenters who are working in the industry – right now.

These courses do NOT focus on the nuts and bolts of writing and constructing sentences. If you need guidance in this area, we suggest you enrol in the 5-week course: Magazine Writing Stage 1.

Ideally you have either:

Already completed Magazine Writing Stage 1 and want to build on your skills with specialist knowledge about interiors, style and design
OR
You intend to enrol in Magazine Writing Stage 1 AFTER you complete this “Industry Insight” course.

These two courses – “Writing About Interiors, Style and Design” and “Magazine Writing Stage 1” are a powerful combination that will give you a great foundation for your new feature writing career.

“Writing About Interiors, Style and Design” will also benefit if you are already working as a feature writer and would like to expand your portfolio into interiors, style and design.
