Amazon’s Kindle bookstore has launched the careers of authors who sell thousands of copies of their books despite having been unable to find a traditional publisher.

The Kindle is the premier eBook reader on the market, with millions sold and 2.5 million titles on sale. Studies show Kindle owners read more, too. Your potential readers don’t even have to own a Kindle to read books bought from the Kindle store: they can download a free Kindle application from Amazon to read on their computers, iPhones, iPads and other mobile devices.

The best news for writers is that they can publish their work on the Kindle for sale to an international audience for free. In the Kindle store authors set their book’s price and receive royalties of up to 70 per cent, far better than what they would get from a traditional publisher.

There’s never been a better time to be a writer, especially as electronic publishing means even a single short story can be published as a “book”. Every writer can now give their creative journey the ultimate final destination by making their work available to readers in a professional way.

• the Kindle itself (its capabilities, limitations and user-experience)
• listing a book in Amazon’s Kindle bookstore (terminology, requirements, options, terms and conditions)
• formatting your book for the Kindle (a major stumbling block for Kindle authors; discussing their pros and cons of options that can otherwise be very confusing)
• building your writer’s platform (putting the book in the Kindle store is just the first step in your marketing)
