Life Writing Masterclass with Patti Miller
Plotting and Planning
2-week course

‘If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.’

This age-old adage has some truth to it, but many writers feel that planning their story stifles their creativity, or takes all the fun out of the writing process. The truth is that writing a novel without a plan is like going on a journey without a map. You are likely to get lost! You will also waste a great deal of time, or, even worse, give up on your writing journey altogether, deciding it’s all too hard.

A strong plot is vital for a story to succeed. In this course, you'll learn exactly what you need to do to ensure your plot results in a powerful and riveting story.

Plot is one of the three key components of any narrative, and yet many writers fail to understand exactly what it is, or how to create one. A strong, compelling plot keeps your readers turning the pages long after lights should have gone out. It makes them laugh and cry and gasp and shiver. Yet building a plot is not nearly as difficult as most people fear. All it takes is a little planning.

There are many different ways to plan a novel, and many different ways to build a plot. This two-part Masterclass on ‘Plotting and Planning’ teaches you the techniques you need to make sure you don’t lose the plot.

What will you learn in the Plotting and Planning course?

The course will teach you:

  • What is a plot, anyway?
  • The Intuitive Approach versus the Analytical Approach
  • The Narrative Arc
  • The Seven Basic Plots (or is there only three?)
  • Turning an idea into a plan – mind-mapping & brainstorming
  • Ten Points to Always Remember
  • and much more

The course will also include a Q & A session, where Kate will help you fix your own plot holes.
