If you've already done the introductory creative writing course or have some experience in creative writing and want to hone your craft, the Novel Writing Workshop will help you enhance your skills and make your book become a reality.
This course will suit people who have a definite project on which they have already done some work – ideally, at least 5000 words. The Novel Writing Workshop is designed for people who want to develop longer pieces of work or a series of short stories. This need not be fiction – memoir, biography or narrative non-fiction are also suitable.
The course is a combination of theory and workshopping. You will be expected to distribute your drafts to your fellow students and receive their comments. You will also be expected to read the work of the others and comment upon it.
Workshopping a range of manuscripts will inevitably throw up a wide range of issues for writers, from voice and characterisation down to grammar and punctuation. Pamela says, ‘Workshopping is one of the best ways to develop your skills as a writer and to identify the particular problems which you face as a storyteller – and then to get lots of help in finding solutions.’
Now that you have learnt the theory, tools and techniques to use in your creative writing, it's time to take your writing to the next level.
Each week will have a short theory section.
Wherever possible, the theory presented in the course will be guided by the questions and needs of the students, so the curriculum may vary from course to course. The lecturer will also follow up questions raised in the class and provide appropriate readings or reading recommendations in the next class.
