Manuscript Clinic

One-on-one Manuscript Clinic with Maree Giles

Wednesday 8 July 2009
One-hour session: $150 (includes GST)

What will you discover?

Are you working on a novel or short story? Or would you like to find out if the piece you’ve started has potential to turn into a novel? An individual one-hour Manuscript Clinic may be just the guidance you’re looking for.

You can book into a Manuscript Clinic with author and creative writing teacher Maree Giles.

A Manuscript Clinic is a private one-hour session where you can get personalised feedback on your work from an industry expert. You can get feedback on a finished work or a work-in-progress.

It’s an intensive approach to assessing your writing where you can get immediate feedback and coaching from Maree.

In your Manuscript Clinic, you may discover:

  • How to improve and “repair” your work: grammar, characterisation, plot, voice, viewpoint
  • How to edit your own work
  • How to create an opening that will hook an agent/publisher/reader
  • Your work will be treated in the strictest confidence
  • Ongoing mentoring support via email if requested (additional fee)

Maree Giles is an award-winning Australian author living in the UK and this will be your only opportunity this year to learn from one of the best. She is the author of three literary novels, The Past Is A Secret Country, Invisible Thread and Under The Green Moon (published by Virago Press). She has written in the UK for Parents Magazine, SHE magazine, The Guardian newspaper, Visnews, and was Home Editor for Woman’s Day Magazine in Sydney.

She has taught journalism and creative writing to students at various adult education colleges and writing centres in England and Australia, has been a guest speaker at the Sydney Writers' Festival and the Byron Bay Writers' Festival, where she also ran Master classes in Creative Writing. Maree is a regular guest speaker at readers’ groups and women’s groups, such as the Australian and New Zealand Womens’ Club, London and the Authors’ Society, London and has been interviewed extensively on radio and by the print media about her life as a writer in exile. At present she is a Royal Literary Fellow Writer-in-Residence at Kingston University, London.

Please note that Maree divides her time between London and Australia. This is a great opportunity for you to tap into her expertise while she’s visiting Sydney.

If you wish to take advantage of this service, you will need to send us the first four chapters of your novel as a Word Attachment. If you are sending a short story you may attach the entire short story. If there are specific chapters you need help with, send those instead, but no more than four at a time. Also please include a 2 to 4 page synopsis, and a brief outline (summary/description) of the story, similar to the blurb on the jacket of a novel.
