Have you ever dreamt about writing stories for children
and young adults? Becoming a successful children's book
author? Even have your stories turn into hit films like
Twilight, Harry Potter or Willy Wonka? |

In just 5 short weeks from now, your dreams can
be reality with the internationally acclaimed Sydney Writers Centre
course 'Writing Books for Children and Young Adults'.

On a midsummer's day back in 1865 the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed down the Thames in a small rowing boat.
With them were 3 young girls, Lorina, Alice and Edith, aged between 12 and 16, the daughters of the Vice Chancellor of Oxford University.
The journey had started at Folly Bridge near Oxford and was to end more than five miles down the Thames in the village of Godstow.
In an effort to keep the young girls entertained, the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that, not so coincidentally, featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure.
The girls loved it. So much in fact that Alice pestered the Reverend to write it down for her… and after a couple of years of persuasion, was able to get the Reverend to put the story on paper.
Today, that story, Alice in Wonderland, is not only one of the biggest sellers, but one of the most highly recognised stories of all time.

Speak to any children’s author and you can see it in their eyes, hear it in their voice. There’s a sense of passion that comes with combining two of the most fulfilling activities, writing, and inspiring children and young adults. That takes your life to a whole different place.
Your instincts come alive with a purpose that reaches far beyond you, growing you as a person through the journey.
And being rewarded to do so, be it financially, or simply though the twinkle of an eye of a child engrossed in your story is just icing on the cake.
|
A world class mentor and children’s book editor will be with you every step of the journey
One of the most powerful aspects of the course is that you’ll be lead and mentored along your 5 week journey by none other than Judith Ridge who is well known both in Australia and Internationally for her involvement in writing for children and young adults.
The insights you’ll discover and skills you’ll develop from being mentored by someone with such a vast experience with ‘Writing for Children and young Adults’ and her industry knowledge will dramatically shorten your learning curve and allow you to compress her decades of wisdom into days or weeks.
If you’ve never heard of Judith, she has worked with the Children's Book Council, as an editor at ABC Children's Books and the NSW School Magazine and freelances as an editor for Random House. Judith edited Handle with Care: Making Friends with Animals by Paul McGreevy - one of Halstead Press' all-time top sellers. She has also edited Piccolo and Annabelle 4: The Steamer Demons by Stephen Axelsen (Random House) and numerous books for ABC Books.
For the past two years, Judith has taught “Writing for Children” at the University of Sydney MA in Creative Writing. She has also been a tutor in children’s literature at Macquarie University.
Judith regularly reviews children’s book in publications such as Good Reading and The Age and is much sought after for her work on countless committees and panels at
festivals and competitions on
children’s literature.
“I love everything about children’s
literature. And I love working
with people who enjoy
writing for children,”
says Judith. “It’s not
my job to tell you what
to write, but I’ll help
you take a piece of
your writing and make
it the best it can be.”

If you’re like most of our participants, you already have an affinity with children, a deep connection that allows you to get into their world, onto their level, a place where you can teach, share and sometimes just listen.
Be it into the world of a 5 year old with a mind like sponge, soaking up every piece of information as they learn, or the world of a 13 year old, who’s beginning to find their inner rebel as their whole world begins to change around them.
You might even work with children day to day, or it might be that you love reading children’s books yourself. Whatever it is, you have some sort of calling inside you. An inspiration. Now you just need to know how to bring it life.
You might have written some stories before and want to take your writing abilities to the next level, or you might not have written a story since high school English, yet know this is something for you.
No matter what your level of skill and experience, The Sydney Writers' Centre Course on Writing Books for Children and Young Adults can help make your dream reality, in just 5 short weeks from now.
If you’ve been wanting to write books for children and young adults for some time now, but have never got started, don’t worry, you’re not alone. One of the biggest misconceptions many people have is that writing a children’s book is easy. But once they start writing, the find that’s not the case at all.
In fact, without the right foundation, it can be even harder than writing for adults.
There are so many more nuances and things that you need to consider. Think about it. Writing for 8 to 10 year olds is very different to writing for 12 to 14 year olds, yet the difference is just 2 years.
You might have grown up loving your Enid Blyton or Nancy Drew books, but everything is SO different now. Stories these days will deal with death, racism, divorce, vampires, anorexia and everything else that was once kept hidden from our children. Stories these days are so much more than going off on an adventure with your friends.
Many aspiring writers will learn the hard way that just because they can write like Enid Blyton, they aren’t going to get very far because that's just not what kids want these days. Kids are so much more discerning these days.
1. With the right foundation, your books will be surefire winners with your readers, however, with the wrong foundation, they’ll do nothing more than pick up dust on the bookshelf.
2. You have the opportunity to really make a difference, a big difference. You know sometimes, a book can be a child’s best friend, their escape from the world. Their fondest memory. Even the point of reference they use to guide them through difficulties.
You’ll understand how to deal with difficult issues, whether they should be in your books and how you should treat them.

"This course was full of practical exercises and insightful readings. The Online Writing Books for Children and Young Adults course with Judith Ridge clarified many aspects of the writing process and the specific needs of a younger audience. As a busy mother of two I found the online mode flexible and convenient."
- Kirryn Mills
"I looked forward to Monday mornings and the start of a new module. Each task was a new challenge that I really enjoyed attempting. It was good to be able to read the other classmates work and just get an idea of how other people worked through the tasks. I have truly learnt a lot from this course. I had a manuscript I thought was ready to go. However, since completing the course I have re-written the whole piece. I have come away with a lot more understanding of what I need to do to write better.
"It was very easy and convenient. I liked the idea of downloading onto my mp3. I found I listened to each module three times each week. It was great not to be committed to a set time to do classes. I could learn at my own pace and take as much or as little time as I needed. Perfect!"

"The most enjoyable part of the course for me was the feedback from my tutor. It was so helpful in developing my writing to hear her feedback, not only my own work but that of the other students. The course has really given me the confidence to send some of my work to publishers. I now know what I really want to do....WRITE."
- Michelle Campbell
"I really enjoyed participating in the writing tasks set for each module. They challenged me to play with new ideas, voices and genres. The audio recordings and printouts had a great deal of information which I can easily refer back to whenever I need. I found the tutor's responses invaluable. • How to write believable dialogue
Once you have your characters, how do you write so your reader loses themselves in their dialogue as if it were a conversation they were a part of instead of reading contrived words on a piece of paper? You’ll learn various strategies that will have you imagining your characters so vividly, that their conversations will write themselves, all you’ll have to do is aim your pen at the paper (or your fingertips at the keyboard, of course)
• The common assumptions about writing for children and about young readers that turn good writing bad and what to do about it
You’ll learn about many common assumptions and mistakes that writers make when writing for children than can turn your story into a dull piece of writing that totally misses the mark. Knowing what these are will help you connect and engage your reader so you resonate deeply with them, their values and their beliefs.
• How to structure a story that works
There are certain structures for stories that are ingrained in our core as humans. You might be familiar with some, or at least realise that many of the books you read or movies you watch have an underlying recipe to them. The right structure will not only grab your readers imagination and lead them through a range of emotions it will make your job as a writer that much easier.
• The secrets to plotting for different age groups
Your plot is the thread that sews everything into a seamless storyline. Yet the way you plot for 10 year old is going to differ dramatically than a young teen. You’ll uncover the secrets for turning your plots into winners.
• What you need to know about getting into the children’s publishing market
Once you’ve written your story, it’s time to get it published. You’ll discover insights into this unique market and what you have to do to turn your story into a book, and potentially a best seller. The insights you’ll gain from Judith into what really works in the real world will be priceless.

"The weekly assignments were superb and forced me to consider many different aspects of writing a story well whilst getting feedback on my own work. I am now able to write dialogue more effectively and can understand the important concept of 'show vs tell' and have tools to further improve my skills in these and other areas.
"The best thing about this mode of delivery was the convenience of participating when geographically a long way from the Sydney Writers' Centre. It was easy, convenient, flexible and well sturctured."
- Cherri Ryan
"The ease of listening to audio when convenient is a definite plus. It has really stimulated me to keep going.
The tutor's thoughtful feedback gave good ideas for improvement and was
very encouraging. Judith Ridge did a great job with chatting to the
class as though she were in the room. The hand-outs were all helpful and
applicable, in particular all the info about publishers and new writers
support sites on the web."
- Christine Huntsdale "Judith Ridge really opened my eyes to the unique art of children's writing. She made me think about how to approach and write for children and to think about the differences between writing for children and writing for adults. She improved my manuscript for children enormously.
"I would recommend her courses to anyone at any level who has an interest in children's literature and writing."
- Sarah Thompson |
MODULE ONE
Getting started / assumptions about children’s literature
The first session will present an overview of writing for children and challenge some assumptions about children and the books written for them. This session will help open up your ideas about writing for children, and raise some of the “issues” around children’s literature.
You’ll start to learn about some of the characteristics of good writing when it comes to children and adolescents… You’ll also learn if there are particular “rules” about plot, language, story content and so on that children’s writers must adhere to.
You’ll create an understanding of the creative writing process, what it is and how you can “experience” creative writing, instead of just “learning” it.
MODULE TWO
Voice and point of view
What most children’s publishers will tell you is that what they are looking for in a manuscript is a fresh, original voice.
What does this mean? What exactly is the story’s “voice” and how do you find the right voice in which to tell your story?
How do you authentically replicate the voice of an 8 year old, or a 14 year old?
The voice you write in is closely associated with the point of view. You’ll discover and the wide range of points you have to choose from and how to use them in your writing.
MODULE THREE
Characterisation and dialogue
Now you’re on your way to finding the voice in which to tell your story, we’ll uncover the tools you can use to create believable characters. Characters that children and young adults will be interested in reading about. You’ll discover how to use dialogue and physical descriptions, and how to create a back story for your character.
You’ll learn how to design a journey the character will undergo through the course of the story.
What is the purpose of this journey in fiction for younger readers? How is this journey different for a child character as opposed to a teenage character? What about adult characters in books for children and young adults?
You’ll also learn about dialogue and how to make it authentic and cliché-free.

"I liked the feedback from Judith very encouraging and constructive. I also enjoyed reading attempts my by fellow classmates. I am now confident of putting pen to paper. Most of the mental missing pieces about writing have fallen into place."
- Kanwar Plaha
"I really enjoyed the tutorials and handouts. I found the assignments challenging and fun and reading the work of other students was inspiring. Judith's feedback was honest, constructive and motivating. After completing the course I have a clear idea of how to progress several of my writing projects. The instructions about character building, sub-plots and writing from different perspectives were particularly helpful. I'm looking forward to Writing for Children part 2 coming online (hint hint)."
- Stephanie Allen
"The audio programs were really good. It was great reading other people's work and seeing how they approach assignments. It has given me new motivation and inspiration to write. It made me realise I might be good at different types of writing. The best thing was I could make use of time in the car (I work and have 2 small children so am very time-poor)."
- Jodi Web

MODULE FOUR
Story structure and editing your own work
The accepted wisdom about children’s books is that they are always strongly plotted.
We’ll be discussing that idea, and learning about what is meant by a “strong plot”. If it’s true that children’s and young adult fiction rely heavily on plot, then how do you structure your story the most effective way possible for a younger readership?
This session will give you an overview of the different rules about plotting for different age ranges.
You’ll also learn about revising your own work, and the role of the editor.
And if you want to get an impartial, external opinion, how to go about finding someone who is legitimate and respected?
MODULE FIVE
Final workshop / knowing the business / where to get published
The final module will focus on the children’s book market. There is a wider range of options for getting published in the children’s market than in the adult fiction market, and we’ll look at how to submit manuscripts, what support networks are out there for children’s writers and other helpful resources.
There are more than just the mainstream publishers. You’ll learn about where to publish short stories for children and young adults, opportunities with educational publishers and publications such as The School Magazine.

To get the most out of this course, we’ve made it very hands on. Each week you’ll receive writing exercises that will take your skills to the next level. And each week you’ll receive personalised feedback on your writing. This in depth feedback from experts in the industry will help you unleash the talented writer within… quickly and easily.
