Do you want to write stories that will keep your readers engaged? How can you turn your book or short story into one that readers just can’t put down?Is it the plot? Your characters? Or an ability to build tension in your story? In this course, you’ll discover the magical ingredients that will turn your prose into a story that readers will find riveting. You’ll learn how to hook your reader and, most importantly, keep them reading.
Whatever stage you’re at in your writing journey, this course will give you invaluable tips on how to enhance your story-telling. You’ll learn how to:
- create the all-important inciting incident
- use language that captures a reader’s curiosity
- write an opening that will hook your reader
- identify the 10 important components of most scenes
- build character awareness, inner demons, setup and back-story
- the dos and don’ts of writing an enticing story
Ultimately, you want readers, publishers and agents to keep reading your story. It’s that simple. By the end of the course, you’ll learn the techniques that will hook your reader - and keep them reading from start to finish.
Maree Giles is an Australian author living in the UK and this will be your only opportunity this year to learn from one of the best. She is the author of three literary novels, The past is a secret country, Invisible thread and Under the green moon, and she has written in the UK for publications such as Parents Magazine, SHE magazine and The Guardian newspaper. She has taught journalism and creative writing to students at various colleges, adult education centres and writing centres in England and Australia, and has been a guest speaker and panellist at the Sydney Writers' Festival and the Byron Bay Writers' Festival.
This course is held at the Sydney Writers' Centre in our professional harbourside training rooms in the evenings.
