Fantasy and Sci-fi

There’s nothing like a fantasy or sci-fi novel to take you into another world. A compelling fantasy/sci-fi story can build a world filled with awe-inspiring landscapes, unique creatures and storylines that defy logic yet inspire your imagination.

If you are interested in creating a fantasy or sci-fi story that’s credible, this workshop will reveal what you need to do in order to produce what Tolkien describes as a believable ‘secondary creation’.

In fact, building a credible and compelling world is the primary job of the fantasy writer - because if your world doesn’t work, your story and characters won’t work either. This workshop covers the process of creating a new world from the ground up, with the goal of helping you to create a world which is internally consistent, fascinating and full of wonder.

This workshop will reveal:

• The secondary worlds typically used in traditional epic fantasies
• Whether you can create a world in an Australian landscape
• What kind of ecosystem should you create?
• The level of technology appropriate for your world
• How to deal with time and history
• Does magic really work?

Your presenter is a world renown fantasy author, Pamela Freeman, who is author of 18 books, the most recent of which, Deep Water (Book 2 of the Castings trilogy) is being published in the US, UK and Germany as well as Australia. She also has a new children's book, Victor's Challenge, coming out in the UK and Australia.

She is best known for her series of fantasy novels, The Floramonde Books (The Willow Tree's Daughter, Windrider & The Centre of Magic), and for an associated junior novel, Victor's Quest (reissued July 2008). You can read more about Pamela here.
