How to turn clumsy writing into gold

  • Do you need to edit documents at work?
  • Would you like to take the guesswork out of editing?
  • Do you have to revise and approve other people’s written communications?

Editing can be a tedious and painstaking process – or an enjoyable task that results in a well-crafted, polished document. It doesn’t have to be a difficult exercise if you know the ground rules for editing business documents.

Once you’ve learnt the right framework for editing business documents, the process is clearer, easier and quicker. Once you’ve learn the right editing rules, you can transform even the most dire, clumsy writing into a successful piece of writing. Importantly, you’re able to ensure consistency of quality across all the written communications you review.

Here's what you'll learn

You’ll understand the flow of the editing process so you can save time and operate efficiently. Whether you’re editing on hard copy (paper) or electronically (online), you’ll learn how to turn any clumsy piece of communication into writing that sparkles.

By the end of this one-day workshop, you’ll also master:

  • how to edit for structure and style
  • simple techniques that will improve anyone’s writing
  • standard proofreading symbols and how to use them
  • understand the steps involved in editing
  • grasp the ‘on-screen editing’ marks (track changes)
  • learn the editorial style rules for common dilemmas involving hyphens, 'number style', lists, quote marks, and more
  • understand the role of editorial style sheets and house-style guides – and how to create them
  • discover how to edit numerical information
  • and MUCH more.

The aim of the workshop is to make your job easier and equip you to add value to the documents you help produce. You’ll be clear about the editing process and have a firm understanding of what you need to do next time you’re faced with a specific editorial dilemma.

You’ll be participating in hands-on exercises so you can practise putting your newly acquired editing skills into action.
