You've got to love the Skeptics. There's certainly no shortage of anything to talk about when they're around! There was an article recently about them in The Sydney Morning Herald and one of our students, Martin, is the president of the society.
One of the great things the society does is offer a prize for critical thinking. And you read that correctly, they really do offer a prize of $10,000.
“The 2007 Australian Skeptics Prize for Critical Thinking will be awarded for work that investigates popular conventional wisdom and beliefs which lack reliable evidence or scientific method, and that promotes rational thinking about such matters by the public, educators and the media.”
Full details are available on our blog here.
Closing date is October 5, 2007 and the winner will be announced on November 17, 2007.

Another student success – congratulations Carly!
Last week we heard from Katja who got a job as a journalist with the Australian Financial Review within three weeks of completing the course Feature Writing for Magazines and Newspapers. This week, it’s Carly Middleton’s turn. Here’s what Carly emailed me:
"I thought I would let you know that I have a new job as the inhouse travel/features journalist for Caravan and Motorhomes magazine! I get to publish a lot of stories - about 5 per month - plus lots of travel in the outback and photography. So thank you for all that you taught us."

Author Interview: Steven Herrick
Steven Herrick's new book Cold Skin has just been released by Allen & Unwin. Steven is an author living in Brisbane. He writes poetry and verse-novels for children and teenagers and his books have received many awards.

Steven took time out of his busy schedule to chat to us here at the Sydney Writers' Centre. A transcript of the interview is on our blog.
Steven’s
advice to aspiring writers is: “Put simply, the best advice to aspiring
writers is to read lots and widely. And when you sit at your desk, try
to write something without thinking too much about the quality. Editing
can fix that up!”
If
you’re interested in writing books for young adults and children, you
can be guided by one of the best and most sought-after children’s book
