Dear Fellow Writer,
In this issue:- Writing books for children
- Double movie passes
- NEXT WEEK: Travel writing
- Stage 2 Creative Writing – take your writing to the next level
- More student successes
- Poetry Slam and free double pass

Do you remember some books from your childhood that have made an indelible impression? I can still remember carrying around books about Ramona the Pest in my infants school library bag, then graduating to The Hobbit in Year 6, before moving on to The Outsiders in high school. In fact, I can still recite lines from The Outsiders – and it’s been a lifetime since
high school!
That’s how literature for children and young adults is – simple stories often making an impression that can
last a lifetime. If you would like to explore the world of Writing Books for Children and Young Adults, our course will set you on the right path.
You’ll learn from Judith Ridge, who is one of the most talented children’s literature editors in Australia. Judith has worked on the School Magazine as well as a freelance children’s book editor for publishers such
as Random House.
When: Every Wednesday for 5 weeks from
17 October 2007
Time: 6.30-8.30pm
Cost: $395

As you know, I love the movies. So I’m pleased to tell you about Angel, a romantic melodrama, which is the adaptation of Elizabeth Taylor’s book of the same name. It’s been released by Dendy Films on 8 November 2007.
Here’s some information from Dendy ….
England, 1905. Angel Deverell is a gifted young writer who dreams of success, fame and love. But what will happen if all her dreams come true?
Starring Romola Garai, Sam Neill and Charlotte Rampling, this is a lavish story of a young woman with incredible imagination who refuses to accept the world around her and instead creates her own realities, pays homage to the Technicolor studio films and Hollywood melodramas in the grandest style possible (think Gone with the Wind meets Absolutely Fabulous!).
Like Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge!, ANGEL revels
in its penny novel plot and uses it as an excuse for
a design that seeks to be on par with the oversized emotions of the story. Everything from the film's look, dialogue, and performances, is entirely intentional; and of course entirely appropriate for a woman who lived her life as if in a fairytale.
We have 15 double movie passes to the preview screening on:
Thursday 25th October @ 6:30pm at Dendy Opera Quays (2 East Circular Quay, Sydney)
All you have to do is email the answer to this question by 5pm on Friday 12 October.
Email: competitions@spindriftmedia.com.au The best answers will win a double pass.
Question: What’s your favourite movie based on a real writer and why?

More student successes

It’s been a busy couple of weeks here at the Sydney Writers’ Centre. I was thrilled to hear from Marija Castellari. Marija did the course Feature Writing for Magazines and Newspapers when she was completely new to writing.
Not long after the course, her first ever published work appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald. Marija - who is a busy mum - and I recently spoke about the possibilities of working part-time in the magazine industry. Here's what Marija emailed me this week.
Just a few short weeks ago, I asked Valerie if it was possible to work part-time in the magazine industry – her response was a resounding YES!
She was right! – I am now the web editor for mychildmagazine.com.au.
Thank you to Valerie for her ongoing support, inspiration, and encouragement.
Valerie is passionate about people pursuing their dream job and the feature writing course was the beginning of my journey in believing a writing career is achievable.
Valerie, thanks again for all your enthusiasm. It really is my dream job and I am still pinching myself.
Marija isn’t the only one with success to report this week …
• From the mentoring program, one mentoree has been commissioned by Vogue
• Two other mentorees have been commissioned by The Sydney Morning Herald.
• I also got an email from former feature writing student Miranda Corkin whose travel piece on Mudgee vineyards appeared in last Saturday’s Sydney Morning Herald. Congratulations to everyone!
The last Feature Writing course for 2007 will be held on a weekend, which may suit you if you can’t attend during the week.
When: 24 November and 1 December 2007 (two consecutive Saturdays)
Time: 9.30am-4.00pm
