Dear Fellow Writer,

In this issue:

  • We’ve got books coming out of our ears
  • NEW Life Writing course announced
  • Jobs for journalists
  • New presenter joins the Sydney Writers’ Centre
  • Sydney Writers’ Festival
  • Upcoming course dates

All the presenters at the Sydney Writers’ Centre have been really busy. We’ve all just released new books. Last month, Geoff Bartlett released his book Mutterings. Geoff teaches the seminar: How to Get Your Book Published.

Our wonderful Life Writing teacher Patti Miller releases The Memoir Book this Friday. Pamela Freeman will be releasing her new book in a couple of months. It's an epic fantasy called Blood Ties. And I just released Australian Innovation: Towards a Sustainable Future. Writing and researching that was like an epic tale in itself!

As you can see they are all VERY different books!

That's what I love about the Sydney Writers' Centre - that we can help aspiring writers with a vast range of interests. Because all our presenters here have such diverse experience.

Learn about how to get your own book published

If you would like an overview of the book publishing process, then Geoff's seminar on How To Get Your Book Published will give you a great snapshot of the industry.

When: Tuesday 29 May 2007
Time: 6.30-8.30pm
Cost: $65

For more information visit our website. Or call us to enroll on (02) 9929 9237.

New Life Writing course with Patti Miller announced
We are so thrilled to be able to announce that Patti Miller has agreed to run another Life Writing course this year. As many of you know, Patti usually only runs the course once a year here so we’re very honoured she will be with us again. If you missed out last time, secure your place now.

Patti will be very busy in the coming months as her new book – The Memoir Book – is being launched this Friday. We know it will be a winner. For more information on Patti’s book visit our blog.

The Life Writing course explores creative autobiographical writing and will set you on the journey of writing your life. Patti is author of the best-selling book, Writing Your Life, and she will show you how to shape your experiences into a well-written, absorbing story.

The course includes workshops that will help you:

•  awaken memory and creativity
•  create the lived reality of your experience on the page
•  bring details to life
•  find structure to your work.

When: Every Thursday for 6 weeks starting Thursday 2 August 2007
Time: 10.00am – 12noon
Cost: $450

For more information visit our website. Or call us to enroll on (02) 9929 9237.

Lots of jobs for journalists and writers

Has anyone noticed that there are quite a number of jobs around for journalists at the moment? From time to time, I search for “journalist” on seek.com.au just to see how the market is doing.

Right now, there are more than the usual number of jobs being advertised. Admittedly many of them are in niche industries – pharma, computer games, sport, science – but that’s certainly a good entry point for someone considering a transition from another career. For example, one of our former students (and excellent writer) Paul was a truck driver before transitioning into a fulltime editorial role for a trucking magazine. (Hi Paul!)

If you happen to like real estate writing, I’ve placed a link to a position for a real estate copywriter on our blog.

New presenter joins the Sydney Writers’ Centre

We’re delighted to announce that PR guru and experienced corporate writer Luisa Volpato has joined our team at the Sydney Writers’ Centre. Luisa will be presenting the seminar How To Write Media Releases. She will also co-teach with me on other courses to be released later in the year.

Luisa has over 15 years experience in public relations and marketing. She has worked as an account director/manager for international public relations companies such as Burson-Marsteller London and Edelman Sydney, across consumer, healthcare and corporate clients. She has also worked in the government, not-for-profit and charity sectors. Most recently Luisa was second in charge of a medium-sized PR and events agency with beauty, lifestyle and fashion clients.

Luisa and I both developed the seminar How to Write Media Releases together a couple of years ago. And we’re thrilled that so many people have found it useful.

Here’s what recent student Atlanta emailed us about the seminar:

"Your media release writing course has paid off for me in terms of publicity.
I could not be happier. Thanks for the great advice. It works!"
- Atlanta Camilleri, Recovery Coach

Thanks Atlanta!

The next seminar in How to Write Media Releases

Sydney Writers’ Festival
28 May – 3 June 2007

I always love the program of the Sydney Writers’ Festival. I’m just not that fond of the crowds. Nevertheless, there are always some gems to be founds – so do pore over their comprehensive offering. If you pick the right sessions, you’ll hopefully come away inspired and ready to write some more.

There is too much to list here, so do visit their website:
