The word conjures up images of romance and experience. The best part is that you can combine it with writing.

Many students have had their travel stories published. You can too. Geoff Bartlett will be presenting our popular Travel Writing seminar on Wednesday 9 April at 6:30pm.

In this seminar Geoff - who is an author, journalist, and an avid traveller with a focus on the South Pacific and Asia - will give you an insight into getting all your travel experiences into print.

You’ll learn what it takes to be a travel writer, expected earnings from travel writing and how to find and focus on your own travel story. Geoff will give you much sought after advice on all aspects of how to potentially earn your keep as a travel writer.

What: Travel writing with Geoff Bartlett
When: Wednesday 9 April 2008
Time: 6.30 - 8.30pm for one night only
Cost: $65

Writing Fix – website of the week

Writing fix has writing prompts, a plot generator, writing lessons and a prompt generator.

It's fun and its aim is to get you writing. So do a few lessons, enter some random words into the prompts and see what it does to your imagination.

Check it out at www.writingfix.com

So you've done one course: Now What?

You’ve got your creative juices flowing with one course at the Sydney Writers’ Centre. So it’s important to keep your momentum going. If you’ve done Creative Writing Stage 1 or Writing Books for Children and Young Adults, we’ve designed a course just for you.

Judith Ridge is presenting the Creative Writing Stage 2 course which starts on the 16th April and runs for 5 weeks.

Creative Writing Stage 2 actually focuses on “doing” and the aim to help you finish a story by the end of course. This is particularly useful if you want to enter it into a short story contest. It's also ideal if you just want to keep on tapping into your creative writing potential

When: Wednesday 16th April 2008 for five weeks
Time: 6:30 – 8:30pm
Cost: $395

Click here for more information or to enroll online.

Meet Jeffrey Archer

The Stanton Library and the Constant Reader bookshop are hosting author events and on the 8th April at 4pm Jeffrey Archer will be signing his new book Prisoner of Birth.

Our new ideas coordinator, Elana, met Jeffrey Archer when she went to a book signing for The Fourth Estate. Sad to say, Elana was no longer an admirer after her encounter with this author.

She says: "There was a long queue and when I finally got to meet Jeffrey Archer and get my book signed, he didn't even look up or smile or even acknowledge that there was a person with his book standing in front of him. I had read all of his books up to that point. As
the Crow Flies
has always been one of my favourites,
but I haven't read any of Jeffrey Archer's books since then."

Have a look at his blog: http://www.jeffreyarchers.blogspot.com/
Hopefully those of you who are going to get a copy of his new book Prisoner of Birth signed have a more pleasant experience. We would love your feedback.

Please have a look at our blog for more details about other author events with Susan Wyndham, Patrice Newell and Steve Toltz and their books at the Constant Reader Bookshop and Stanton Library.

How not to get distracted while you're trying to write

When you’re writing, it can be easy to get distracted. However, if you want to write well, you need discipline and focus.

So here are a few tips to get you focused on your writing:
  • Turn anything that beeps, rings or talks off.
  • Get up at a certain time everyday. Set your alarm for work and have a shower, make coffee and get to where you write on time.
  • If you have a crazy desktop with thousands of installed programs, clean up; clear them off the desktop and into folders in your computer. Only have a word document or notepad on your desk or computer so you have to start writing.
  • Time and plan your breaks. Set an alarm if you must to make you feel like you are 'working' and to get you away from the computer.
  • Have a lunch break - trust me get out in the sun and do some exercise!

If you write after hours, or work full time or have to write once the pets are fed and the children are asleep:

  • Make an “I'm writing” sign and let everyone know you cannot be disturbed.
  • Find the time which best suits you to write - set an alarm for early mornings or graveyard writing!
  • Keep a pen and note book handy.
  • Don't put any pressure on yourself if you're too overwhelmed to write.
  • But do set aside to write a certain amount each week because writing regularly really helps keep the flow and creativity going.

Another student success

Congratulations to Sam Thomas who has completed both Creative Writing Stage 1 and Feature Writing for Magazines and Newspapers.

She's just gained a permanent part-time position as feature writer for The Word backpacker magazine. Sam is off on her first 3 day travel writing assignment to Alice Springs.

Great news Sam!

Special offer to readers of Get Published
We've got a special offer for all our newsletter readers:

We've got a special offer for all our newsletter readers - tickets for Prequels and Sequels is a performance at Newtown Theatre. The reason we're excited about it is because Sydney Writers' Centre presenter Geoff Bartlett is involved. Some of you will know that Geoff presents Travel Writing and How to get Your Book Published. He is also an author, comedian, journalist,  travel writer and photographer.

Have you ever watched a motion picture and wondered what it would be like if someone else was playing the lead? Someone like Orlando Bloom or Bono? Or "I wish this motion picture was in Spain or the Arctic or Africa instead"? Or "l
wish there was a sequel so we can see what happens
after they get married or whether he dies"?

With Prequels or Sequels, you can. You're in the charge of the script, location, recasting and even making a sequel of a motion picture you love while some of Sydney's top comedians create the motion picture you want.

Prequels and Sequels will be at the Newtown Theatre on the 13th,  20th 27th April and 4th,  11th and 18th May at 8pm. Geoff has arranged for all subscribers to this newsletter to get a concession rate of $20 (usual price is $26). Mention the word,  ‘Hollywood’ when booking online with Ticketek to get the concession.

Book here and remember to mention Hollywood!

Your name in a different print

If you want to own a piece of history, North Sydney Council is selling old street signs to raise money for charity. We’ve already snapped up “Lavender Street” which is where the courses are held. But we’ve also noticed some great street names you might like – some of them are the first names and surnames of our students.

For more details, have a look at our blog.
