Dear Fellow Writer,

In this issue:

  • NEW ONLINE writing courses - learn wherever you are. Enrol now.
  • Freelance writer wanted by World Movies channel
  • Double passes to NIGHT at the Dendy for you
  • “Your” versus “you’re”
  • Business writing - how to get it right at work

This week, I’ve received so many messages from students who have recently finished courses.

The first is from Mitch Lewis whose short story

“Australia Day” has been accepted into Short and Twisted 2008.

Mitch took the Creative Writing Stage 1 course with Pamela Freeman last year. He’s already been published in magazines, short-listed for a regular column and will now feature in this collection of stories. Congratulations Mitch - we can’t wait for
your first novel!

NEW: ONLINE Creative Writing Stage 1 - enroll now
We love taking people like Mitch on their creative writing journey. And now you can learn the craft no matter where you live. We’re pleased to announce that the ONLINE Creative Writing Stage 1 course will start the week beginning 18 February 2008.

This course is the same as the one that’s conducted in the classrooms here at the Sydney Writers’ Centre. So you’ll benefit from Pamela Freeman’s experience and advice in our virtual classroom.

The beauty about the online course is that non-Sydney-siders can learn - just as if you’re sitting in the classroom here. You can listen to the audio program in the comfort of your own home. All you need is high-speed internet (ADSL or cable).

This course is ideal for people who want to explore writing fiction, short stories or perhaps, one day, a novel. This creative writing course will teach you how to:

    * kick-start the creative writing process
    * tap into your imagination
    * draw from everyday experiences and memories
    * examine different types of creative writing
    * give structure to your writing
    * use characters and dialogue

By the end of the course you'll improve your creative writing skills and have the confidence to pursue your own writing projects. Before long, you’ll see your words in print. Just like Mitch.

When: The week beginning Monday 18 February 2008
Time: Whenever suits you
Cost: $395

I’ve also received so much good news from former students of Feature Writing for Magazines and Newspapers this week.

Tatyana just scored a job with My Child magazine. Niamh is being sent by a Sydney-based magazine to Darwin on a media trip. And Sue’s travel story on “Falling fowl of the chicken bus” set in Guatemala was in The Sun-Herald last Sunday.

Again, even if you’re not based in Sydney, the next online course starts the week beginning 11 February 2008.

When: Week beginning Monday 11 January 2008
Time: Whenever it suits you
Cost: $395

20 Double passes to NIGHT - thanks to Dendy Cinemas

Thanks to everyone who entered the competition in the last newsletter. This issue, we have another competition - this time with 20 double passes to be won. This is thanks to our friends at Dendy Cinemas who are screening a special preview on: Wednesday 30 January at 6.30pm, Dendy Opera Quays at East Circular Quay.

Here is some information about the movie. It sounds awesome.

A stunning big screen event from award-winning director Lawrence Johnston, this epic and hauntingly beautiful film celebrates Australia at night, exploring the universal nature of night and how we experience it.

Set to a lush and dramatic symphonic score from composer Cezary Skubiszewski, NIGHT combines arresting imagery of people and places, urban and rural, with Australians from all walks of life telling their stories of what the night means to them; the pleasure and pain, the reality and the fantasy, work and leisure, past and present.

In cinemas Feb 7, 2008

To win a double pass, just email your contact details and the answer to this question to competitions@spindriftmedia.com.au You must email you entry by 5pm Friday 25 January 2008 - the most creative entries win. Entries are open only to subscribers of this newsletter.

Question: What’s the best thing about night?

What’s wrong with this picture?

I was checking out the Asus EEE PC at Myer the other day and couldn’t resist taking a picture of their sign.

Can you see what’s wrong with this picture? It’s a common mistake. If you’re confused about which word to use - your or you’re - it’s easy.

Just remember that “your” refers to something that belongs to you.
“You’re” is a contraction of “you are”.
