We’re really excited
here at the Sydney Writers' Centre. Our online feature writing course
just started. It’s great to be able to take our courses to people in
all states in Australia. The course was booked out quickly so we've
announced another date:Online Feature Writing for Magazines and Newspapers
When: The week beginning Monday 24 September 2007 (runs for 5 weeks)
Time: Whenever it suits you
Cost: $395

In the spirit of taking the message of good writing and communication to all regions, last week I went to Port Macquarie as a keynote speaker for the NSW Department State and Regional Development’s Women in Business program. I spoke on Talking to the Media – an overview of how individuals and businesses can get their message or organization into newspapers, and on radio and TV.
Getting the right media coverage can make or break a business or an event. I'm really passionate about this topic because I think that it’s easy to do this – once you know the secrets of how to make headlines.
That's why I created the one-day seminar, Media Releases That Get Results, with my good friend and colleague Luisa Volpato - a public relations guru.
Luisa and I have worked together for years and we created a special
interactive seminar that will reveal the tried and true techniques of
how to write media releases that get results.
What: Media Releases That Get Results
When: Friday 14 September 2007
Time: 9.30am-4.30pm
Cost: $345
"Excellent ideas and polished presentation. It was well-researched and it was great to hear ideas from other attendees. I'm looking forward to attending another workshop."
- Mary Jane Trujillo, Mount St Benedict College
"The seminar was fantastic - I would highly recommend this to others."
- Carolyn Dean, Inner Focus
"Your media release writing course has paid off for me in terms of publicity. I could not be happier. Thanks for the great advice. It works!"
- Atlanta Camilleri, Recovery Coach
This includes practical exercises so you can work on your media releases. For more information on the course click here.
Another student success - congratulations Katja!
I was so thrilled to hear from Katja Buhrer last week. Katja only completed the course Feature Writing for Magazines and Newspapers a few weeks ago. She wanted to change careers and become a journalist. Well, congratulations are in order for Katja because she is now a journalist with the Australian Financial Review. Great work!
NEXT WEEK'S SEMINAR: How to write winning reports and proposals
Earlier this year, I ran a training program for a major global financial institution to help its staff write better at work. It was great fun because I love to help make people’s jobs easier - particularly when it comes to writing.I've
met so many people who find writing a chore at work, but it doesn't
have to be that way. And even if I just share a few tips with them,
they can immediately see how a few simple rules and guidelines can take
the stress out of business writing.
That's why I'm so proud of our seminar: How to Write Winning Reports and Proposals, which I co-created with Mel Wilkinson.
In one-day, you'll learn a framework for writing reports and proposals that will impress your bosses and get the deal done.
What: How to Write Winning Reports and Proposals
Time: 9.00am to 5.00pm
Cost: $395

Everyone has a book in them - we’ll help you write a great book
The creative writing students here at the Sydney Writers' Centre are going from strength to strength. Even though Pamela Freeman and Judith Ridge are the key teachers in the creative writing courses, I sometimes get to read the work produced by students - and I’m consistently blown away by the talented writers here.

World of words at the State Library
I
love the State Library. It's like a gorgeous haven in the middle of the
city and I wish I could get to it more often. They have some cool
events and I wanted to highlight one because Miles Merrill (pictured
below) is speaking at it. I was on a panel with Miles last week talking
about careers in writing and he's an incredible inspiration for what
he's doing with spoken word in Australia.
Here's some information about the event.
Canadian spoken word champion Shane Koyczan will rock the Library with his raw and powerful rhymes. His riveting stage performances have attracted rave reviews around the world, and his critically acclaimed book of poetry, Visiting Hours, is a best-seller. Shane was the first poet from outside the USA to win the prestigious National Poetry Slam. Following his performance, Shane will be joined by Miles Merrill, co-organiser of the Australian Poetry Slam 07, for a discussion on the spoken word movement and its growing popularity. Local spoken word artists are invited to join Shane for an informal poetry jam.Details
Tuesday 11 September, 6pm for 6.30pm to 7.45pm
State Library Galleries, Macquarie Street, Sydney.
Cost: $15.
Bookings: (02) 9273 1770, bookings@sl.nsw.gov.au
I’m really glad to see that some of the writing gigs I include in this newsletter are useful. I just heard from Monica Tan - former student and now full time journalist with ninemsn - that she got a great response to the music blogger position I mentioned in the last newsletter.
