- Media Releases that Get Results
- Do you segue or segue-way or seg-way?
- Summarise text with just one click
- Get published in magazines: Online Feature Writing
- WEBPICK: Relay Write
Recently, I was interviewed by small business expert Robert Gerrish for BNET. I talked about how you can get your organisation or message in the media. Here it is, I hope you enjoy it!
This is a topic that I’m particularly passionate about. That’s because, as a journalist, I’m sent media releases all the time. Some are great. Some are very boring. And some are downright embarrassing.
If you need to send out media releases, it’s important that you’re doing it right. You need the right angle and structure, the ideal quotes from spokespeople and you have to understand WHEN to send your release to a journalist.
If not, the journalist will hit the "Delete" button and you’ve lost your chance to be featured in the media. In our one-day workshop, Media Releases that Get Results, you’ll discover:
- how to present media releases
- essential information and statistics
- how to structure a release
- who you should quote and what they should say
- what to leave out of your release
- writing supplementary press materials
The seminar is ideal for:
- business owners, coaches, speakers, entrepreneurs who want to promote their business.
- professionals who have been given PR or marketing responsibilities but who may not have had formal training in this area
- people who are relatively new to a public relations role

Do you segue or segue-way or segway?
Speaking of media releases, I received one the other day which included the word "segue-way". I had a little chuckle. Maybe you’ve seen it too.The correct word is "segue" - but it’s pronounced seg-way.
It means: "To move smoothly and unhesitatingly from one state, condition, situation, or element to another."
For example: "The band segued from their rock hit into a ballad."
I often see these variations of "segue":
* "segue-way" which is just wrong
* "segway" which is a personal transportation buggy that you ride standing up.
Test it out on your friends and colleagues and see if they know the right spelling! Ok, I admit, I do that all the time - much to their annoyance. You’ll be surprised at how many people think the correct word is "segue-way". Wrong!
Summarize text with just one click
Great Summary is a cool web-based application that allows you to cut and paste chunks of text into it. Then it summarizes the key points of the selected text. You can also summarize entire web pages. You can even pick the number of lines you’ll like to see in the summarized result. While I wouldn’t say you should rely on it when you want to summarize important documents, it’s certainly a fun tool to try out. And it’s free.
