Dear Fellow Writer,
In this issue:- Vogel Award for first time novelists
- Online creative writing
- Free seminars for creative people coming up
- Slippery When Wet short story competition
- Happy Easter and have a great break.
I hope you are
all looking forward to the Easter break. I’m really keen on a have a
rest as we’ve been really busy here at the Sydney Writers’ Centre.
Expect to see lots of new developments in the months to come. Tomorrow,
I’m going to start tackling the big egg (pictured) which has found its
way into my home.In fact, I may even tuck into it tonight … while indulging in my latest addiction The Biggest Loser.
Happy Easter everyone!
Enter the Vogel Award for first time novelists
Entries open 22 March and close 31st May.
If you are keen to get your novel published then I highly recommend that you enter The Australian/Vogel Literary Award. It’s a very prestigious award for an unpublished manuscript by a writer under the age of 35.
You get published by Allen & Unwin and - to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vogel company in Australia - there is a one-off prize for this year only of $50,000, in addition to normal royalties from sales. (The usual prize money is around $20,000 so this is a big jump).
I hope to see many Sydney Writers’ Centre graduates enter this award!
The Australian/Vogel Literary Award has launched the careers of some of Australia's young writers,
including Tim Winton, Kate Grenville, Brian Castro and Andrew McGahan. Winners have later won or been short-listed for other major awards such as the Miles Franklin Literary Award, the Commonwealth Writers Prize and the Booker Prize.

If you are starting out in creative writing (and are not quite ready to enter the Vogel) then you’ll benefit from our ONLINE course in Creative Writing Stage 1.

Seminars for creative people during Arts Law Week
March 31 to April 5 2008
The Arts Law Centre of Australia is presenting a series of free seminars and workshops for Sydney based artists, arts organisations and other creative people, including writers.
Not all the seminars will be relevant to writers but I’ll certainly be going to ones about intellectual property and copyright.
“Arts Law legal staff, together with Sydney entertainment lawyers and arts professionals, will deliver mostly free events for artists and organizations to gain skills and knowledge critical to the practice of their art.”
Most sessions will be held at the Rex Centre (Kings Cross), and are free.

Slippery When Wet short story competition
No, no, the rock band Bon Jovi is not holding a short story competition (they have a CD called Slippery When Wet – and yes, I confess I have it).Slippery When Wet is a book of short stories published each year. And if you aren’t quite advanced enough to write a novel, I strongly recommend that you start with short stories. I also strongly recommend that you enter them in short story competitions, particularly if this means you end up being published in a book.
Entry is open to all amateur writers across Australia and New Zealand. Entries must be unpublished and must not have won any other awards. A maximum of 2000 words per story applies.
Entries close Friday, 9 May 2008.

In particular, if you’ve already done Creative Writing Stage 1 or Writing Books for Children, then you want to ensure that you keep your momentum going.Creative Writing Stage 2 is a very practical course with opportunities to workshop your writing in class. In this course, the focus is on “doing” so that you can keep your creative writing momentum going and actually produce a finished story.
