Meet playwright Tom Stoppard
If you enjoy the theatre, you’ll appreciate this rare event – Tom Stoppard in conversation with Andrew Upton. Readers of this newsletter have access to an exclusive offer to spend an afternoon with Tom Stoppard on Sunday 16 December 2007 at 2pm.

Stoppard’s plays include Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Arcadia. I’ve seen both productions and they are brilliant. He also wrote the screenplay for Shakespeare in Love – starring Gwyneth Paltrow – for which he won an Oscar.

Tickets are normally $39. You can get them for $35 by calling (02) 9250 7777 and quote “Rosencrantz”.

We also have a double pass to giveaway but you must
email competitions@spindriftmedia.com.au before 5pm today (Friday 16 November) with the answer to “Where is Arcadia?” The most creative answer gets the double pass.

How to get your book published with Geoff Bartlett
So you have a great book idea … but what does it actually take to get a book published?

Geoff Bartlett’s invaluable seminar gives you an overview of the book publishing process and what
you need to do to get your book on the shelves.

The seminar will cover:
  • How to write a winning book proposal
  • How to approach publishers
  • Do you need an agent?
  • How much should you write before
    approaching a publisher?
  • Negotiating a fair contract
  • The editing and re-writing process

What past students say:
"The seminar created much needed confidence regarding approaching publishers and how to present ourselves/our work to a publisher."
- Alan Blake

"Great info told in a no nonsense, real yet inspirational way. Well organized, extremely good value and very comprehensive given short duration. I've been able to draft a strong book proposal today."
- Michael Neaylon

When: Tuesday 20 November
Time: 6.30pm - 8.30pm
Fee: $65 (includes GST)

Take your freelance writing career to the next level

If you already have some experience in pitching stories to editors but want to take your freelance writing to the next level (and make a lucrative income from it) then this is for you.

Please note: this seminar is NOT ideal for new writers. It is expected that you have been freelancing fulltime for at least six months or are already in the publishing industry working full time but want to go freelance.

The most important thing to remember is that “freelance” does not equal “poor”. Valerie Khoo and Gayle Bryant - who are both successful, financially independent freelancers - make a healthy living from freelance writing.

What past students say:
"The Freelance Success Seminar is invaluable for all freelancers, from those just launching their freelancing career through to experienced writers looking for a motivational boost.
- Briar Jensen

Freelance success seminar

It was great to hear from the following students this week.

Aoife McGee recently completed Online Feature Writing for Magazines and Newspapers. Aoife’s story on climbing the Harbour Bridge was published in an overseas publication.

Sam Thomas recently completed the Creative Writing course. Sam’s 5,000-word article on brain cancer was published in Shattered Magazine last week.

Catherine Stewart, who has completed Freelance Success and How to Get Your Book Published, has been presented with the Horticulture Media Association’s Paper Journalism ‘Laurel’, awarded for an original feature/article/column published in the last 2 years.

Great work everyone!

Movie tickets: 5 double passes to Twice Upon a Time

Our fabulous friends at Dendy Films are offering 5 double passes to Twice Upon a Time. Here is some information about the movie which starts in December:

Alice d’Abanville (Charlotte Rampling), an immensely famous London stage actress, and Louis Ruinard (Jean Rochefort), a cult French film director, are two extraordinary personalities.

They were the most strikingly glamorous couple of the 70s. But this legendary pair haven’t seen each other in thirty years. In fact, they’ve done all they can not to see each other since their abrupt, incomprehensible separation. Alice doesn’t want to see Louis again. Louis is captivated by her all over again…

What do you do with the great love of your life thirty years later when you no longer have anything in common?

You can win a double pass to the preview screening which is on Wednesday 21 November at 6.30 at Dendy Opera Quays.

I think Charlotte Rampling is a wonderful actress and I can’t wait to see this movie. If you want to, you have to be quick! Email the answer to this question to competitions@spindriftmedia.com.au by 5pm today (Friday 16 November).

“What would you do if you saw one of your loves 30 years later?” The most interesting answers get the tickets.
