The science behind the headlines you read
Ever wondered how editors come up with the snappy headlines you read in the newspapers? To take an interesting look at how headlines are shaped and tweaked for maximum impact, check out the website:
www.thequickbrown.com
This website tracks the changes that are made to headlines on Fox News in the US. If you go to the section called “Top Stories” and click on some of the stories, you’ll see the minor (and major) headline changes that have been implemented in order to grab the attention of readers.
SUMMER INTENSIVE COURSES: Magazine Writing
While January is time for a well earned break for many, it’s also a great time to get started on some new interests. After the popularity of the intensive courses this year, we are running BOTH Magazine Writing and Creative Writing as intensive summer sessions.
This way you’ll complete the course in five days and you'll be able to fast-track your writing journey.
Feature Writing for Magazines and Newspapers with Valerie Khoo
When: Monday 14 to Friday 18 January 2008
(5 consecutive days)
Time: 10am - 12noon

Overall, it was excellent. Absolutely inspiring!"

SUMMER INTENSIVE COURSES: Creative Writing - Stage 1
If you are at the start of your creative writing journey – or if you used to enjoy writing at school but haven’t done anything about it since – then this is for you. Pamela Freeman runs an inspiring, information-
packed course that will help you shape your stories into a compelling read.
Creative Writing – Stage 1
When: Monday 21 to Friday 25 January 2008
(5 consecutive days)
Time: 10am - 12noon

Former creative writing student Michelle Barraclough says:
"I loved the course. It was great because it gave me
the basic foundations and structure for good writing. It's not enough to have an idea or a perceived flair for writing. There are RULES! With writing, you need to understand the basics
of good dialogue, characterization, structure (scene & summary), point of view, and editing.”

What a year!
It’s been a busy year and we’ve loved every minute of it. I’m particularly inspired because it seems like every day I’m contacted by a former student who has achieved success in writing – big or small.
Whether you’re being published for the first time in the local paper or your company newsletter, or scoring a book deal with a major publisher (yes, one student gave me that news this week!), the fact that you are succeeding is what makes us successful.
For example, it was wonderful to hear from Daniel Papas who came all the way from Melbourne for the Freelance Success Seminar a couple of weeks ago.
Daniel emailed:
“I was at the Freelance Success seminar last night and just wanted to say … thanks. I came up from Melbourne especially for it, and it was definitely worth it!”
In particular, your success is due to the wonderful group of talented and inspiring presenters here at the Sydney Writer’s Centre. We’re privileged to have a team of the best presenters in Australia – and I’m so thrilled that the results speak for themselves.
Thanks to Pamela, Judith, Patti, Geoff, Katrina, Mel, Gayle and Luisa. Also, thanks to Tracy and Mey for your hard work in the office.
