Dear Fellow Writer,

In this issue:

  • Get paid for your summer holiday
  • What’s wrong with this sign?
  • Starlight Cinema Leichhardt - double pass
    giveaway
  • Writing books for children - enroll now
  • Self publishing vs mainstream publishing – which
    is best for you?

Happy new year. This start of the year is a great time to plan for the months ahead. If you’ve been thinking of exploring the world of writing, this could be your year to get published, write your memoir or change careers.

We’ll help you make it happen. Just as we helped so many students last year. You’ll find a course that’s just right to achieve your writing goals. Or give us a call and have a chat about what’s ideal for you.

Our summer intensive writing courses have been totally booked out and we’ve announced new dates for courses in this newsletter. I’m sure you’ll find something where you’ll expand your horizons, meet new people, learn new skills – and maybe even
change your life.

Turn your summer holiday into dollars
Wouldn’t it be great if you could get paid to travel? Geoff Bartlett’s Travel Writing seminar will help you do just that. This seminar is a great overview of the travel writing industry.

What: Travel Writing seminar
When: Thursday 24 January 2008
Time: 6.30 - 8.30pm
Cost: $65

There are only a few places left.
Click here for more information or to enroll online.

What’s wrong with this sign?

I'm not sure why apostrophes are so misused but everywhere you look there are errant apostrophes all over the place. Can you see what's wrong with this sign which I found in
Crows Nest in Sydney?

If you said that it should read:
parties instead of party's - then you are right!

Remember that just because a word has an 's' at the end doesn't mean you need to use an apostrophe.

Apostrophes are used to indicate possession (as in John's car). Or they are used in contractions (as in it's being a contraction of it is).

Children’s writing course

If you want to write books for kids, Judith Ridge’s popular course Writing Books for Children and Young Adults only has a few places left. The course will cover:
    • How to get started
    • Finding the right voice
    • Creating characters and stories young readers
      will enjoy
    • Common assumptions about writing for children
      and about young readers
    • Understanding the children's publishing market

When: Every Wednesday starting Wednesday 23 January 2008 for 5 weeks
Time: 6.30-8.30pm
Cost $395

Click here for more information or to enroll online.

Double pass to Starlight Cinema Leichhardt – exclusive to readers of this newsletter

One of the best things about summer is outdoor cinemas. I love grabbing a bottle of wine, picnic blanket, nibblies (and Aerogard) to watch a movie with friends.

Starlight Cinema 2008 Leichhardt Oval Season has a great line-up of movies under the stars. Opening night of Starlight Cinema’s Leichhardt Oval is Tuesday 15 January 2008.

This year, the line-up includes movies like Into the Wild (which I can’t wait to see), Jerry Seinfeld’s new Bee Movie, The Home Song Stories and more.

Starlight Cinema gates and the Dining Terrace open from 7pm each night. Tickets for are available online from $16 or from the gate each night from $20.

However, we have a double pass to win. All you have to do is email your contact details and the answer to this question to competitions@spindriftmedia.com.au You must email your entry by 5pm Monday 14 January 2008 - the most creative entry wins. Entries are open only to subscribers of this newsletter.

Question: What’s the best thing about summer?

The season runs from 15 January 2008 to Friday 25 January and full details are on our blog or go to www.starlightcinema.com.au
